Solid colour inserts can also be used to further enhance your deck.  For example you may wish to draw attention to certain areas of the deck for both visual, practical or health and safety reasons.

 

If decking is used on a stairway then it is a good idea to use a coloured insert on the edge board to make it easier to see.  Research carried out by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) indicates that most accidents on stair cases occur due to over stepping caused by a person misjudging where the edge of the step is.  Similarly, if different parts of the deck are at different heights, a coloured edge board will make the edge of where one level ends and another starts easier to see.  A change in colour is a powerful and effective way to draw attention to any potential hazard.
