The New British Standard

BS 5534:2003+A1:2010 Critical Changes for roofing battens - what does this mean for you?

The new British Standard for roofing battens has just been updated to BS 5534:2003+A1:2010. There are some significant and important changes with respect to roofing battens:
  • The maximum size for knots that appear on both edges but not on this face is now 5mm on each edge (25mm side) NOT the previously allowed 15mm.
  • Batten must now be straight! There are new tolerances with respect to bow, twist and spring.
To put our customers' minds at rest, John Brash have always used side board material and actively scans out from all our production any timber containing centre cut where these defects typically occur.

For help and advice on all aspects of batten grading, see our checklist for roofing battens and download our 2010 on-site grading guide which will be available shortly. See also our new information sheet about the new BS 5534:2003+A1:2010.

Better still, think "safety first" and use JB-RED factory graded batten that ticks all the grading and safety boxes for you.
