Project Information:  Western Red Cedar Shingles with FRT Exterior® Fire Retardant Treatment (AA Rating) provided the Welsh Primary School in Swansea with feature cladding to the curved external walls, in order to create what the architect describes as a ‘cedar shell’.  The BREEAM Schools ‘Very Good’ rating was achieved by the building meeting a selection of credit based environmental performance criteria. BREEAM is the Environmental Assessment Method developed by the BRE (Building Research Establishment), which assesses the environmental performance and sustainability of buildings. All primary school projects over Ł500,000 and secondary schools over Ł2m have to achieve a BREEAM Schools ‘Very Good’ assessment.   Western Red Cedar Shingles are extremely versatile which allows them to be used for vertical cladding to roofs with pitches as low as 14 degrees.  The natural preservative in Cedar also ensures it is an especially durable timber, which gives it an effective life of up to 60 years.
